Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the federal government’s proposed tax reforms will help eliminate multiple levies on small businesses and ease the tax burden on low-income Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during an interfaith breaking of fast for Ramadan and Lent at the State House in Abuja, Shettima said the reforms were designed to boost economic well-being and reduce poverty.

Participants at the event included members of the Federal Executive Council, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

The vice president dismissed claims that the reforms would harm the poor, insisting the policy would instead ease financial pressure on vulnerable groups.

“The same people who are shouting hoarse that the tax reform is meant to pulverise and pauperise the poor are far from the truth,” he said.

“We have to go out and tell the truth to the people. We have to educate them.”

Shettima urged public officials to engage Nigerians directly about government policies and address misinformation.

He also cited several outcomes of the administration’s economic reforms, including improved foreign exchange reserves and a more unified exchange rate system.

According to him, the decision to remove the fuel subsidy addressed a long-standing distortion that mainly benefited a few individuals.

“Three years down the road, the economy has bounced back.”

He encouraged government officials to continue highlighting the administration’s achievements while countering what he described as false narratives from opposition parties.
