Sowunmi: Tinubu May Win 2027 Election but Still Face Rigging Allegations

Segun Sowunmi warns that rejecting the 2027 election outcome could threaten Nigeria’s stability, urging politicians to accept voters’ verdict.

Former PDP spokesperson Segun Sowunmi has warned that the aftermath of the 2027 presidential election could pose a major challenge to Nigeria’s political stability, particularly if defeated candidates refuse to accept the result.

Sowunmi, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, said President Bola Tinubu could win the 2027 presidential election but still face allegations that the election was rigged.

“I pity him (Tinubu) because after he wins, they’re going to start saying he rigged,” he said.

According to the PDP chieftain, the central issue for Nigeria after the 2027 election would not simply be determining who wins or loses, but ensuring that political actors accept the verdict of the electorate.

He said voters have the right to choose their preferred candidate and that politicians should respect that decision, even when the result goes against them.

“The biggest challenge for the stability of this country going forward is not so much who will win or who will lose, but how they will accept outcomes,” Sowunmi said.

He argued that an election could produce an unexpected result and that losing candidates should not automatically interpret such an outcome as evidence of wrongdoing.

“Because if you do an election and people can vote for you, they can vote for your rival,” he said.

Sowunmi further warned that persistent rejection of an election result and attempts to mobilise public anger against the declared winner could threaten national stability.

He questioned how a candidate who wins through the votes of Nigerians could become the “victim” of those same votes if opponents refuse to accept the outcome.

“And if they do happen to vote for your rival and he wins, if you insist that all you are going to be doing is screaming up and down and instigating the society, how does the winner become the victim of the votes people gave him?” he asked.

He therefore called on political actors to prioritise peace and national stability after the 2027 poll, while encouraging those who dispute the result to pursue legitimate legal channels rather than resorting to agitation.
