The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended three doctors after establishing a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct in connection with the death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The action follows an investigation triggered by a formal complaint submitted to the Council on January 16, 2026. In response, medical professionals from Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital filed affidavits and appeared before the MDCN Investigative Panel to give oral evidence.

During its 25th session held in Abuja on February 17–18, 2026, the Panel concluded that sufficient grounds existed to establish a prima facie case of medical negligence against Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare; Dr. Titus Ogundare, an Anaesthesiologist at Euracare; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.

The Council imposed interim suspension orders on the three doctors pending the outcome of formal disciplinary proceedings. It also determined that 10 other practitioners at Atlantis Paediatric Hospital were involved in acts of professional misconduct.

“These cases have been referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal for formal hearing and determination in accordance with the Council’s statutory mandate,” the MDCN stated.

The Council underscored that the findings are preliminary and should not be interpreted as a final judgment on liability. “The affected practitioners are entitled to a full hearing before the Disciplinary Tribunal, where evidence will be examined and a final decision rendered,” it added.

The MDCN said proceedings before the Tribunal will commence in due course, pledging transparency and strict compliance with its regulatory framework throughout the disciplinary process.
