U.S President Donald Trump has said he should have a direct role in determining Iran’s next supreme leader following the death of Ali Khamenei.

Speaking in an interview with Axios on Thursday, Trump said the United States must be involved in the leadership transition in Iran.

He noted that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late supreme leader, is widely viewed as a leading contender but rejected the idea of him taking over.

“They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy [Rodríguez] in Venezuela,” Trump said.

“Khamenei son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”

Trump also referenced Venezuela’s political shift, where Delcy Rodríguez became leader after U.S. strikes led to the removal of Nicolás Maduro.

Iran has yet to formally announce a successor, and uncertainty persists over the country’s leadership structure.

According to reports, shortly after Khamenei’s death, a building housing the clerical body responsible for selecting the next supreme leader was bombed while votes were being counted.

The ongoing instability in Iran has heightened concerns about regional security and the broader geopolitical consequences of the leadership transition.
