United Nigeria Airlines, with the logo “Flying to Unite” becomes the latest West African regional airline, to undertake its inaugural flight from Lagos to Accra, on November 10th, primarily facilitating trade and tourism, and aiming at passenger connectivity between the fastest growing capital cities in Ghana and Nigeria. The flight will carry travellers from Abuja and Lagos to the destination of Accra.

In June 2025, United Airlines announced plans to commence regional and international flight operations to six countries. The airline disclosed that by August 25, 2025, it will commence regional flights to Ghana, and later with plans for international flights to other destinations, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa and Senegal, at a later date, after getting regulatory approval and agreement from the appropriate organizations.

By its first external flight, United Nigeria Airlines which was created by a public-private partnership (PPP) has the capacity to rival established continental airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines. While United Nigeria Airlines is absolutely a newcomer and the aviation project is at this present trial stage, Ethiopian Airlines, being the largest carrier in Africa, has nearly 80 years of successful global airline experience. Presumably, both have extremely vast economic and strategic interests as airline carriers.

United Nigeria Airlines is struggling to maintain roles for pilots, engineers, flight attendants, office staff such as accountants, human resources personnel, and so on. Aviation safety remains uncertain. It has oversee the aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities in Nigeria.

Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria, told the local Nigeria media that his airline business would perhaps become a strategic player in the industry, would diligently work to meet expectations, and played down on negative incidences in the aviation sector, further highlighted calculated efforts to sabotage his business by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

On 12 February 2021, 50-seater Embraer 145 flight made its first flight from Murtala Muhammed international airport, Lagos State, to Akanu Ibiam international airport, Enugu State. Since then, it has operated regular scheduled services to a few destinations inside Nigeria.

That however, in January 2025, NBC News reported a flight from Nigeria to D.C. experiences ‘unexpected aircraft movement’ and added that officials were cooperating with U.S. and Nigerian investigators to determine what exactly happened on the flight.

According to the news reports, the flight had “a technical issue and an unexpected aircraft movement.” The airline described the six people hospitalized as four passengers and two flight attendants who suffered minor injuries.

United Nigeria has signed a partnership agreement with United States-based Southwest Airlines to bring in six Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Four additional Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft will join the fleet by 2026. Reflecting on the deal, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, said it was necessary put on record the strong support received from Boeing throughout the entire process and the promise for continued support to ensure a smooth entry into service and operation of the fleet. The excellent maintenance culture of Southwest Airlines, which is in line with United Nigeria Airlines’ culture, was the unique motivation to make the acquisition.
