The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its embassy in Abuja and consulate in Lagos will be closed on Friday, July 3, in commemoration of US Independence Day.

The notice was disclosed in a statement posted on the mission’s official social media accounts on Thursday.

“The US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of US Independence Day,” the statement read.

The annual celebration, popularly referred to as the Fourth of July, is officially marked every July 4 in the United States.

The day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when thirteen American colonies declared independence from British rule, paving the way for the creation of the United States of America as an independent nation.
