Women and Youths at the Heart of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, by Paul Alimu Maunta

The recent declaration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the concerns of women and youths is a refreshing and commendable step. His commitment, as reported in ThisDay on December 9, 2024, underlines the administration’s focus on empowering these critical groups, which are the backbone of any society.

President Tinubu’s administration has shown its intent to tackle issues such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women. By supporting programs like “Empower-Her,” which provides agricultural resources and financial backing for women farmers, he acknowledges the essential role women play in national food security. Similarly, efforts to provide women with access to justice and protection from violence are long-overdue reforms aimed at fostering equity and security in society.

Youth empowerment remains another highlight of Tinubu’s agenda. Initiatives such as the Youth Investment Fund and vocational training programs signal the government’s acknowledgment of the immense potential in young Nigerians. These programs are designed to bridge skill gaps and provide platforms for meaningful engagement in various sectors of the economy.

Furthermore, the active participation of women leaders like the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, in grassroots initiatives ensures that policies resonate with local realities. For example, the Renewed Hope Initiative demonstrates how government partnerships can empower rural women and tackle poverty across the geopolitical zones.

This focus on inclusive growth cannot be overstated. Empowering women and youths is not just a moral imperative; it is an economic necessity. Studies suggest that reducing gender inequality and investing in youth can significantly boost GDP and create a more stable society.

However, achieving these goals requires consistent action and transparency. Implementation should be devoid of political or regional bias. Women and youth in underserved and conflict-prone areas, such as parts of the North East, should receive equal attention to ensure balanced development.

Equally important is the need for sustained collaboration between the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations. A united front will maximize resources and ensure the impact of initiatives like the Empower-Her program and youth skills training.

President Tinubu’s call for collective action is timely, but the government must also hold itself accountable. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms should be established to measure the progress and effectiveness of these initiatives. Citizens should be informed about successes and challenges, fostering trust and participation.

While the challenges facing women and youths are daunting, the administration’s commitment is a step in the right direction. With genuine efforts and collective support, we can create a Nigeria where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

The nation’s development lies in the hands of its people, and by addressing the concerns of women and youths, Nigeria is indeed on the path to a brighter future.
