20 Killed, Five Injured in Multiple Crash on Hawan Kibo-Jos Road
Twenty people were killed and five injured in a multiple crash on the Hawan Kibo-Jos route, with brake failure and loss of control identified as likely causes.
Twenty people have been confirmed dead following a multiple road traffic crash along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Plateau State, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, made this known in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.
Ohaeri said the accident occurred at approximately 3:32 p.m. after Sopp Water Falls. Preliminary findings identified brake failure and loss of control as possible causes of the crash.
A total of 25 people were involved in the incident, including 23 males and two females. Five people survived with injuries, comprising three males and two females, while 20 males were killed.
Four vehicles were involved in the crash.
“Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN.
“Others were a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M and a Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express.
“The fourth vehicle was a motorcycle whose registration particulars were not available,” Ohaeri said.
The injured victims were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for treatment, while the remains of those who died were deposited at JUTH Mortuary.
FRSC rescue personnel also removed the obstruction created by the crash and reopened the affected portion of the highway to traffic.
Reacting to the tragedy, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed his sadness over the loss of lives and condoled with the families, friends and associates of the victims.
He also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery and ordered the crash investigation team to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the reported brake failure and loss of control.
Mohammed urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, properly maintained and driven at appropriate speeds.
He also called on drivers to exercise greater caution, noting the devastating impact of the crash.
“The loss of 20 lives in a single crash represents 20 families suddenly plunged into grief. Behind every number is a name, a home, a family and a future,” he said.
The Corps Marshal urged all road users to take personal responsibility for safety, emphasising that no journey should be considered so urgent that it ends in death.
