The All Progressives Congress (APC) has re-elected Professor Nentawe Yilwatda and Senator Ajibola Basiru as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, at its 8th National Convention in Abuja.

The exercise, held on Friday, saw all members of the National Working Committee (NWC) returned through a consensus arrangement endorsed by voice vote.

The leadership team, sworn in immediately, will manage party affairs for the next four years.

Among those elected are Ali Dalori (Deputy National Chairman, North), Benjamin Nwoye (Deputy National Chairman, South), Murtala Kankia (Legal Adviser), Haruna Ginsau (Financial Secretary), and Felix Morka (Publicity Secretary).

In his remarks, Yilwatda outlined the party’s vision under his leadership.

“Our mission is clear… we will build a Pan-African and Pan-Nigerian party… more disciplined and united than ever,” he said.

“We will deepen internal democracy… expand our reach… and empower our youth.”

Security Clampdown Overshadows Convention

The convention at Eagle Square witnessed a heavy security presence that restricted movement across Abuja.

Journalists reported being barred at checkpoints despite accreditation, with some alleging threats from security personnel. Those who eventually gained access were later displaced from certain areas by party delegates.

Top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, attended the event alongside governors, lawmakers, and party leaders.

Masari: ‘You Are Here to Shape History’

Chairman of the convention’s coordinating committee, Aminu Bello Masari, urged delegates to recognise the significance of their role.

“This convention is not a routine… it is a solemn assembly… You are here to shape history,” he said.

He also highlighted the country’s economic and security challenges, describing them as opportunities for resilience and reform.

Economic Reforms Highlighted

Minister of Finance Wale Edun defended the administration’s policies, noting improvements in economic growth.

“By choosing to act, you chose courage over comfort… and chose Nigeria over politics,” he said, adding that growth has increased to about 4% annually.

He also pointed to expanded support for agriculture and plans to revitalise the power sector through partnerships with the World Bank.

Consensus with Limited Contests

Although most positions were filled through consensus, a few roles were contested, including Deputy National Chairman (South) and National Welfare Secretary.

Despite efforts to ensure a smooth process, the heavy security presence and reported media restrictions cast a shadow over the convention proceedings.
