Atiku’s absence from G100 summit not consequential, says ADC
The ADC has explained Atiku Abubakar’s absence from the G100 opposition summit, saying the meeting focused on cooperation between political parties.
ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed concerns over the absence of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from the G100 opposition summit in Abuja, saying the meeting was intended to bring political parties together rather than their presidential candidates.
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi stated this on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s Day Break.
Abdullahi said the central objective of the summit was to identify opportunities for cooperation among opposition parties as they prepare for the 2027 elections.
“The way we understand it, the summit is more about conversation between political parties rather than conversation among candidates. It’s more about exploring cooperation opportunities among political parties,” he said.
He maintained that Atiku’s absence did not affect the ADC’s participation because several senior party officials represented the organisation at the meeting.
“So it’s not consequential that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was not present. I was there. The party was highly represented. We had like four vice chairmen there at the G100 summit. So ADC was fully represented that we participated in the process,” Abdullahi said.
The G100 summit, held Monday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, was attended by representatives of six major opposition parties.
The parties are seeking to develop a coordinated strategy and framework for cooperation as they prepare to challenge the APC in 2027.
Atiku was not the only prominent opposition figure missing from the meeting. Peter Obi of the NDC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and representatives linked to the APM were also absent.
The summit nevertheless attracted several presidential candidates, including Donald Duke of the PRP, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Moses Adebisi of the DLA.
The ADC’s explanation comes amid growing attention on the opposition coalition effort and the question of whether the parties can overcome individual ambitions and agree on a common strategy before the 2027 presidential election.
