The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has granted land allocation documents to members of the FCT Council of Traditional Rulers, alongside a waiver of all statutory fees attached to the titles.

Speaking during a meeting with the council in Abuja on Friday, Wike said the gesture was in line with directives from President Bola Tinubu and aimed at strengthening collaboration between the government and traditional institutions.

He stressed that the decision reflects recognition of indigenous communities who occupied the area before the creation of the FCT.

“We cannot deny the fact that there are indigenous people who were here before the creation of the FCT,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of inclusiveness, the minister added: “If those who make peace cannot be appreciated with land, who should be?”

Wike also lauded the monarchs for their contribution to the peaceful conduct of the recent Area Council elections, describing the exercise as the most peaceful in the territory’s history.

As part of additional support, he pledged to provide utility vehicles to all traditional rulers in the FCT to aid their roles in maintaining peace and stability.

He further noted that it would be unjust to require traditional rulers to pay high fees for land they and their ancestors have occupied for generations.

The minister also pointed to ongoing infrastructure development projects in satellite towns, including the Airport–Kuje road dualisation, the Bwari–Zuba link road, projects in Apo/Karshi and Basan Jiwa, and the Gbazango road network.

In response, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, expressed gratitude and assured the administration of the continued support of traditional institutions.
