KANO — April 24, 2026: The impact of rising fuel prices is becoming increasingly evident across major cities, as transport fares surge and commuters struggle to cope with higher daily expenses.

A survey conducted in parts of Kano, Lagos, and Abuja revealed that commercial drivers have adjusted fares upward in response to increased petrol costs. In some cases, fares have doubled on key routes, leaving many passengers stranded or forced to seek alternatives.

Commuters expressed frustration over the situation, noting that transportation now consumes a significant portion of their income. “What I spend on transport in a week used to last me nearly a month,” a civil servant said.

Transport operators, however, insist that the fare increases are unavoidable. According to them, the cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and spare parts has risen sharply in recent months.

Economic observers warn that the ripple effects of fuel price increases extend beyond transportation, affecting food prices and other essential goods due to higher logistics costs.
