The Nigerian Army on Tuesday launched a three-day Social Media Awareness Campaign aimed at strengthening cybersecurity awareness and promoting responsible online conduct among its personnel. Organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, the campaign is taking place at Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, from March 24 to 26.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, GOC 1 Division, said the initiative seeks to equip personnel with knowledge and skills for navigating the digital landscape safely. He was represented by Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, 1 Division.

Wase highlighted that social media plays a vital role in shaping public perception, influencing security, and affecting operational outcomes. “Understanding the opportunities and risks associated with social media is essential for military personnel in safeguarding national security and institutional integrity,” he said.

“The Nigerian Army recognises that social media is a double-edged sword. While it offers opportunities for communication, engagement and intelligence gathering, it also poses significant risks if not properly managed,” Wase added.

The campaign will address issues such as digital footprint management, cybersecurity best practices, the influence of social media on security operations, and its role in national defence. Wase urged participants to engage actively with experts to enhance their knowledge and operational readiness.

He commended the Cyber Warfare Command for its proactive efforts and emphasised that continuous learning is vital to keeping up with evolving digital trends. The initiative is expected to strengthen both individual and collective performance, building a more digitally aware and resilient force.

According to NAN, the sensitisation program will feature lectures and interactive sessions, forming part of the Army’s broader strategy to integrate cyber strategies into military operations and improve national security.
