Fresh attacks were reported between Russia and Ukraine on Tuesday after a three-day ceasefire expired, with Ukrainian authorities confirming drone strikes on Kyiv and one death in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The ceasefire, announced by US President Donald Trump ahead of Russia’s World War II commemorations, had raised hopes of renewed peace negotiations in the long-running war.

Trump said Friday he hoped the temporary truce would become “the beginning of the end” of the conflict that began after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the pause in fighting, both countries accused each other of carrying out attacks during the truce period.

Hours after the ceasefire ended, Ukrainian officials reported drone activity over the capital.

“Enemy UAVs are currently over Kyiv. Please stay safe until the alert is cleared,” Kyiv military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko posted on Telegram.

Authorities urged residents to stay inside shelters as air defence systems responded to the threat.

In eastern Ukraine, officials said Russian strikes killed one person and injured four others in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Regional administration head Oleksandr Ganzha said a man was killed and a woman wounded in the Synelnykove district, while three more people suffered injuries in separate attacks elsewhere in the region.

Russia’s defence ministry, meanwhile, said its air defence systems destroyed 27 Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod, Voronezh and Rostov regions during the early hours of Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of continuing hostilities during the ceasefire and said there had been “no silence at the front.”

“Today there was no silence at the front, there was fighting. We have recorded all of this,” Zelensky said in his daily address.

He also remarked that the conflict involving Iran was now drawing greater attention from Washington, potentially affecting international focus on the war in Ukraine.

Efforts to revive negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow have so far failed to produce results, with diplomatic momentum increasingly overshadowed by developments in the Middle East crisis involving Iran.
