Former presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over claims that ₦8.83 trillion spent in 2025 was not captured in the national budget.

Obi made the remarks in a statement posted on Sunday via his X handle, citing details from the International Monetary Fund’s consultation report on Nigeria.

He alleged that the expenditure was not appropriated by the National Assembly and therefore lacked legislative oversight and administrative accountability.

“The recent report from the IMF consultation further raises concerns about the scale of grand corruption under the Tinubu government. The IMF now reveals that about ₦8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 is not reflected in the budget. This expenditure is not budgeted and is therefore not under legislative oversight or administrative scrutiny. This is horrible,” Obi said.

According to him, the reported amount accounts for nearly two per cent of Nigeria’s GDP and exceeds 35 per cent of the country’s ₦23.96 trillion capital expenditure budget for 2025.

Obi also argued that the figure is larger than the total allocations to the education and health sectors combined in the 2025 budget.

He said the money could have been channelled into improving essential public services, creating employment opportunities and supporting economic development if effectively managed.

The former Anambra governor claimed the alleged off-budget spending reflected a broader trend of financial mismanagement under the current administration.

He further warned that failure to uphold proper public financial management standards could deepen poverty and negatively affect national stability.

Obi described the Tinubu administration as “grossly corrupt, incompetent and insensitive,” insisting that the reported expenditure reinforced the need for stronger accountability in government spending.

He also renewed his call for President Tinubu’s resignation, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on campaign promises and not prioritising the welfare and security of citizens.

The former presidential candidate urged Nigerians to continue holding the government accountable through democratic and lawful processes.

At the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the Federal Government had yet to issue an official response to Obi’s allegations.
