TikTok Video: Amnesty Calls on Madonna University to Lift Student Sanctions
Amnesty International Nigeria urges Madonna University to reverse the expulsion of a nursing student and suspension of 14 others over a viral TikTok video.
PORT HARCOURT — Amnesty International Nigeria has appealed to Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, to rescind sanctions imposed on students over a viral TikTok video.
The appeal follows the expulsion of a final-year nursing student and the suspension of 14 other 500-level students in connection with the video.
In a statement posted on its X platform on Thursday, Amnesty described the punishments as disproportionate and called for the matter to be resolved through dialogue and mediation.
The rights organisation warned that heavy-handed academic and disciplinary measures could negatively affect the students’ academic progress.
It said the students have rights to freedom of expression, academic freedom and education, stressing that the sanctions could discourage others from exercising these rights.
“Amnesty International urges the authorities of Madonna University Elele Campus, Rivers State, to rescind the expulsion of a final-year nursing student and the suspension of 14 other 500-level students over a viral TikTok video,” the organisation said.
“The expulsion and suspension are disproportionate.”
Amnesty further urged Madonna University to review its policies and disciplinary procedures to ensure they align with international human rights standards.
It also called on the institution to respect and protect the rights of its students, especially their rights to freedom of expression, education and academic freedom.
