ADC Campaign: Shettima’s ‘Caracas’ Remark Exposes APC’s Record Under Buhari
ADC campaign spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan says Shettima’s ‘Caracas’ remark exposes the APC’s record and accuses Tinubu of worsening economic hardship.
ABUJA – The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADCPCC) has faulted Vice President Kashim Shettima’s claim that President Bola Tinubu rescued Nigeria from economic collapse, arguing that the statement places responsibility on the APC and the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The council said Shettima’s reference to Nigeria heading towards a ‘Caracas’ situation before Tinubu became president raises questions about the APC’s eight years in power under Buhari.
Director of Media and Publicity of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the position known in a statement on Sunday.
Ologbondiyan argued that the APC could not separate itself from Buhari’s record while Tinubu continues to seek a second term under the party and has consistently defended the former administration and pledged to build on its achievements.
“Vice President Shettima’s statement is self-indicting. If Nigeria was heading to Caracas under Buhari, it means Buhari and the APC deceived Nigerians for eight years,” he said.
According to him, Nigerians were more interested in the realities of everyday life than political arguments, pointing to the state of roads, electricity, public institutions and the rising cost of living.
“But Nigerians do not know Buhari as an individual; Nigerians know APC. It is the APC, on whose platform President Tinubu is seeking a second term, that has failed Nigerians for almost 12 years and is undeserving of another four years,” he said.
The ADC campaign council further disputed the suggestion that Nigeria was only approaching a ‘Caracas’ scenario, maintaining that the country was already experiencing the effects.
“Nigerians are not heading to Caracas; under the APC, Nigerians are already living the Caracas experience in their own country,” Ologbondiyan said.
He accused the Tinubu administration of worsening several economic and social challenges, including hunger, inflation, naira devaluation, insecurity, unemployment and the cost of living.
“President Tinubu has not saved Nigeria from collapse; he has pushed the country deeper into economic ruin,” he said.
The council also questioned Shettima’s pledge to introduce 10,600 electric tricycles, 300 buses and electric taxis under an e-logistics programme. It recalled an earlier promise by the administration that transportation costs would fall by October 1, 2026.
The ADC council called on the APC to acknowledge the challenges Nigerians are facing, while reaffirming that the ADC remained committed to offering an alternative government.
