Croatia Reunion Awaits England as Tuchel Targets World Cup Glory

England’s quest to finally end decades of World Cup disappointment will begin with a familiar challenge after being drawn alongside Croatia in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The group, which also features Ghana and Panama, offers Thomas Tuchel an early test as he seeks to deliver the trophy that narrowly eluded England during the era of Gareth Southgate.

Since taking charge in late 2024, Tuchel has made no secret of his ambition to win the World Cup. He inherited a squad that cruised through qualification with eight victories from eight matches and no goals conceded, but he has already stamped his authority on the team.

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager has left out several notable names, including Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, while stressing his desire to create a “brotherhood” within the squad.

England remain packed with world-class talent. Captain Harry Kane leads a squad featuring Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, all regarded among the finest players in international football.

Yet questions persist about England’s defensive depth and whether their hopes once again depend too heavily on Kane’s goals.

The opening fixture against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on June 17 is likely to provide an early indication of England’s credentials.

Few nations have consistently exceeded expectations at major tournaments like Croatia. Despite their modest population, they have produced remarkable World Cup performances, finishing third in 1998 and 2022 while reaching the final in 2018.

Led by coach Zlatko Dalic, the Croatians arrive unbeaten from qualifying and with a squad blending experience and quality.

Central to their hopes remains captain Luka Modric. At 40, the former Ballon d’Or winner continues to defy age and is expected to feature despite suffering a cheekbone fracture earlier this year.

Alongside him are familiar faces such as Ivan Perisic, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic.

Ghana and Panama may enter the group as outsiders, but both possess players capable of causing problems. Ghana, under the guidance of Carlos Queiroz, will look to the attacking threat of Antoine Semenyo, while Panama hope their experienced core can improve on their only previous World Cup campaign.

For England, however, the spotlight remains firmly on whether Tuchel can finally guide the Three Lions beyond the heartbreaks of recent years and turn a talented generation into world champions.
