INEC Extends Continuous Voter Registration, Introduces Online Self-Registration Platform
The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the nationwide voter registration exercise and unveiled a new self-service online registration option for eligible Nigerians.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with the new deadline now set for Friday, July 24, 2026.
The disclosure was made on Friday night in Abuja by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC).
Haruna said the extension came after the Commission reviewed the progress of the exercise and considered feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.
He stated that the CVR exercise, which started on August 18, 2025, was extended to allow more eligible citizens who have not yet registered the opportunity to participate before future electoral activities.
According to the Commission, the extension demonstrates INEC’s commitment to giving every qualified Nigerian a fair and reasonable chance to be captured in the Register of Voters.
Alongside the extension, INEC unveiled a self-service online registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
The Commission said the service will be accessible from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, via its dedicated CVR portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org, where applicants can also access a detailed step-by-step registration guide.
INEC explained that the platform will allow eligible Nigerians to complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without the need to visit an INEC office physically.
The Commission further stated that the platform features identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to maintain the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
INEC encouraged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended deadline and the newly introduced technology, stressing its dedication to a credible, inclusive, and accessible voter registration system powered by technology to improve the electoral process.
