Dutch football officials have spoken out against racist abuse on social media targeting Netherlands players after the country’s World Cup campaign came to an end.

The Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in a dramatic round-of-32 encounter on Monday in Monterrey, Mexico. The match ended 1-1 before the North African side triumphed in the penalty shootout.

Cody Gakpo of Liverpool opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 72nd minute, but Morocco forced extra drama when Issa Diop found the equaliser in stoppage time.

Following the defeat, the Dutch football association expressed gratitude to the squad and technical crew for their “dedication and commitment” during the tournament staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We also extend our sincere appreciation to the supporters — those in the stadium, those watching from home, and everyone around the world who followed and supported the Netherlands,” the association said.

The federation also condemned racist reactions aimed at some Dutch players after the loss.

“Football brings people together, regardless of origin or background,” the statement added.

“We have seen online reactions in which players have been subjected to racist and discriminatory abuse following the team’s elimination.

“We draw a clear line against such behaviour. Racism and discrimination have no place in football, online, or in our society.”
