No fewer than six suspected fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province have reportedly died following an accidental improvised explosive device explosion in Borno State.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning in Jubilaram, located in Marte Local Government Area, where the militants were allegedly assembling explosives when the device detonated unexpectedly.

Security sources said the blast happened at about 7:00 a.m. and affected members of an ISWAP bomb-making unit operating within the Lake Chad region.

Among those killed was a suspected explosives specialist identified as Abu Umar, who reportedly led the IED manufacturing group.

Three other suspected militants sustained severe injuries during the explosion.

Intelligence assessments indicated that the group operated within the Marte–Kerenoa–Wulgo axis, an area frequently associated with insurgent movement and operations around the Lake Chad Basin.

The explosion reportedly destroyed an IED production site located between Arinna Maimasallaci and Arinna Ciki.

Military and security sources believe the loss of experienced bomb makers could disrupt ISWAP’s ability to produce improvised explosive devices in the area.

The incident also came shortly after reports that joint US forces and the Nigerian Army eliminated a senior ISWAP commander in the Lake Chad region.

Security authorities are reportedly planning follow-up military operations aimed at taking advantage of the disruption and further limiting insurgent activity across the Marte axis.
