US President Donald Trump has deleted a controversial social media image that appeared to depict him in a Jesus-like role, following backlash from religious leaders who condemned it as blasphemous.

The image, posted on Truth Social late Sunday, showed Trump in flowing robes, appearing to heal a sick man, with light emanating from his hand and head as onlookers watched in reverence.

The post was removed on Monday after drawing criticism, particularly from conservative Christian voices.

Responding to questions, Trump said the image was misunderstood.

“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do Red Cross,” he said.

“It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better… I make people a lot better.”

Among those who reacted strongly was Megan Basham, who called the post “OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy” and urged the president to apologise.

“I don’t know if the President thought he was being funny… He needs to take this down immediately and ask for forgiveness,” she wrote.

Trump has previously shared religious imagery, including a 2023 illustration showing him seated beside Jesus during a courtroom appearance.

Supporters have also drawn parallels between Trump and Jesus, with televangelist Paula White-Cain recently comparing his experiences to those of Christ at a White House Easter event.

“You were betrayed and arrested and falsely accused. It’s a familiar pattern that our Lord and Savior showed us,” she said.
