Trump Wants Peace Deal to End Ukraine War, Says US Official
Trump remains optimistic about securing a Russia-Ukraine peace agreement despite failed ceasefire efforts, a US official told AFP.
A US official on Thursday said President Donald Trump is determined to secure a peace deal to stop the “senseless killing” in Ukraine following a deadly Russian missile and drone barrage on Kyiv that killed at least 21 people.
Speaking to AFP after the attack, the official said: “President Trump has a humanitarian heart and wants this war settled so the senseless killing ends.”
“The President and his team have worked very hard to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and he remains optimistic that we’ll ultimately get a peace deal done,” the official added.
The latest Russian assault caused extensive damage to apartment buildings in the Ukrainian capital and forced tens of thousands of residents to seek refuge in shelters overnight.
Following the attack, both Kyiv and Moscow vowed to intensify military operations in the conflict, which has now stretched into its fourth year.
Trump had previously stated before returning to office that he could end the war within 24 hours, but diplomatic efforts by Washington to secure a ceasefire between the two sides have not produced results so far.
The US president has frequently criticised the high cost of military assistance to Ukraine and notably clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an Oval Office meeting in February 2025.
While Trump has generally adopted a more conciliatory tone toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, he has also reportedly expressed increasing frustration over Moscow’s unwillingness to end the conflict.
On Thursday, Zelensky appealed to international allies to speed up the delivery of air-defense support to Ukraine ahead of next week’s NATO summit in Ankara, which Trump is scheduled to attend.
