The Abia State Government has expanded efforts to locate two pupils allegedly abducted by a tricycle operator in Umuosu Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.

Security Adviser to Governor Alex Otti, retired Navy Commander McDonald Ubah, said the search operation now extends to neighbouring states amid suspicions that the incident may involve child trafficking.

“We are doing everything possible to rescue the children. We have spread our contacts across the security network in neighbouring states because we suspect this is a case of child trafficking,” Ubah said on Monday after the state Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.

He urged parents and guardians to be more watchful over their children’s movements, warning that carelessness could expose minors to criminal activities.

Ubah assured residents that the government and security agencies were fully committed to ensuring the children’s safe return.

Meanwhile, Information Commissioner Okey Kanu said relief materials had been provided to victims of the recent oil pipeline explosion in Owaza community.

According to him, the Commissioners for Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Environment had visited the affected locations to assess the damage caused by the explosion and oil spill.

“The state government has already sent the Commissioners for Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Environment to inspect the affected sites,” Kanu said.

“We will ensure that such explosions do not happen again in our oil-producing communities.”

Kanu also revealed that the Executive Council approved contracts for road construction and rehabilitation projects in several parts of Abia State.
