The Ghanaian football community is in mourning after the death of Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old striker for Berekum Chelsea FC, who was killed in an armed robbery attack on his team bus.

According to the Ghana Football Association, the incident occurred on Sunday night after the team returned from an away fixture.

The club confirmed that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” ambushed the bus, firing shots and forcing players to abandon the vehicle and seek safety in nearby bushes.

Ghana police said the attack happened around 10:30 pm local time (2230 GMT) along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.

Frimpong was later confirmed dead at hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.

Police also reported that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of 4,500 cedis ($408) during the attack.

The Ghana Football Association described the killing as “tragic” and a major loss to both the club and national football.

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the association said.

Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year, making 13 appearances and scoring twice before his untimely death.
