Bad Governance: Nigeria Has A Case Study -By Macdonald Ashinze

In conclusion, the implementation of taxes also by the government is alarming, as of today the government stated that there would be an increment in tax on telecommunication services. This this increment happens, how would students or citizens who do their jobs online be able to run their businesses, we are still complaining about the fact that most time data doesn’t last any longer, then if an increment in tax happens how do the government expects youth to find an end meet. Then they start saying that the youths are lazy, when there is no even job for people to work.

Nigeria has remained a laggard in social, economic and political development, in spite of all the social and economic policies that have been implemented by successive administration. As a result, political instability, abject poverty, acute youth unemployment, heightened crime rate, poor health prospects, widespread malnourishment have been the main features of Nigeria’s political economy.

Mismanagement of funds, whereby the leaders prioritize self enrichment over the welfare of the citizens is now very rampant in the country today, if we pay close attention to the upcoming elections, which is to take place next year, the government are already using public funds which are ment to meet the need of the citizens for campaigns, lavishing the over trying to win votes from citizens. Now Nigerians are saying that wouldn’t stand, they want to vote for the right candidates to have a better life in the country, but the question is in the democracy of today, will our votes count?

Then the government also try to put people who are closer to them ( relative) in power, in other for them to still have access to funds, and when this money are stolen are usually intractable, a clear example of this is the case of the senatorial position here in Delta state, people no longer have rights to choose who they want in power, lack of transparency is also on key factor that accounts to the bad governance in the Nigeria of today. When the government is not willing to be open to the people, how do you expect the citizens to trust them. Thereby the citizens do not even have ordinary civil rights, or let me say we do but we can not use or right in the country, as a result of the ineffective rule of law. This rule of law only tends to guide the political elite alone.

In the world of Nigeria today, we see various writers writing about the inadequacies of the country’s problem, Nigeria has done more harm than good to us. In the month of may 2026, we had a case of banditry in Oyo state, whereby little children were also kidnapped. The only thing we can be proud to count correctly now are dead body’s, the government is not ready to see to the situation of the country, and if this continues the country will become uncomfortable for everyone to live in. This is the reason we have cases of migration, everyone now wants to japa out of the country to at least not just to find an end meet, but to so be find a country to be safe in.

Should we also talk about the national grid that keeps collapsing almost every month, funds which are supposed to be allocated to the necessities of the citizens are been squandered by the government, whereby people now starts depending on getting electricity form other means e.g solar and generator. Now most people might not be able to afford solar, so they go in for generators in other to run their their businesses properly, then comes in the scarcity and high price of fuel. As a result of this, the price of things in the market tends to also skyrocket, the average Nigeria can not even feed properly. Just few months ago, the price of gas also got increased, how does the government expects the citizens to be able to feed or be financially stable when all of this are not been looked into.

Furthermore, the government keeps borrowing is into debt, the question is this money being borrowed what has it been used what, what is the goal of borrowing the money because Nigeria’s keep complaining daily. With current money that has been borrowed, Nigeria’s debt currently is about 120 million, and the current president is still looking forward to borrowing more. If we pay close attention to Nigeria education today, you would notice is nothing to write home about, funds which are supposed to be allocated for students to have a proper and sound education are now used to renovate government houses, getting a luxury life for themselves, and then they fly their children abroad to have a standard education.

I can say for sure that, lack of employment is what is resulting to kidnapping, killings, banditry, robbery, yahoo yahoo(theft) etc. Young people do also of this so they can be at least financially stable and take care of themselves and family. Something need to be done, and if this thing are left unattended to, true development and progress will likely not happen in the country.
