Eid Holiday Challenges Won’t Stop NDC Primaries, Party Insists
NDC insists its nationwide primaries will hold on May 29, citing Eid-el-Kabir travel disruptions and warning against unauthorized activities by state agencies.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says its nationwide primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions will proceed on May 29, 2026, despite disruptions caused by the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.
In a statement signed by National Chairman Moses Cleopas and National Secretary Barr. Ikenna Enekweizu, the party noted that the original schedule for May 28 and 29 remains unchanged, but acknowledged that travel and logistical problems affected preparations.
The NDC explained that flight shortages and transportation difficulties left many aspirants and screening committee members stranded in Abuja after the screening exercise.
As a result, the party said May 28 would now focus on arrivals, consultations, documentation with INEC and security agencies, and meetings with party stakeholders and aspirants across the states.
The statement emphasized that activities planned for May 28 are strictly internal party affairs, adding that agencies such as the police, INEC, DSS, and others are not expected to participate.
“Any activities carried out outside these guidelines would be unauthorized and deemed illegal,” the statement warned.
According to the party, the order of activities for the May 29 primaries will begin with the presidential affirmation, followed by National Assembly primaries and affirmations, State Assembly primaries and affirmations, and finally governorship primaries and affirmations.
The NDC further stated that all results would be transmitted to the National Headquarters for collation and official announcement by the National Working Committee (NWC), stressing that no state executive or electoral team is authorized to independently declare results.
The party also appealed to aspirants, delegates, and supporters to maintain peace and discipline throughout the exercise.
“We call for understanding and urge all participants to conduct themselves responsibly, as the party has zero tolerance for violence, disorderly conduct, and hooliganism,” the statement said.
In addition, the NDC unveiled members of its electoral committees for all 36 states and the FCT to oversee the primaries.
Notable appointments include Professor Osita Ogbu for Anambra, Dr. Osusu Osusu for Rivers, Chief Barnabas Ejisi for the FCT, Dr. Peter Onigah for Ebonyi, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi for Lagos, Dr. Kebiru Umoru for Delta, and Barr. Fredrick Owotorufa for Edo State.
The party said the committees were constituted to guarantee credible and peaceful primaries ahead of the 2027 elections and urged party members nationwide to cooperate fully with them.
