El-Rufai in Court as Legal Battle Deepens Ahead of ADC Convention
Nasir El-Rufai returns to Kaduna High Court as ICPC trial resumes, facing multiple fraud and abuse of office charges while ADC convention looms.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, appeared at the Kaduna State High Court on Monday as his ongoing trial resumed in a case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Just before stepping into the courtroom, El-Rufai briefly turned his attention to politics, referencing the upcoming African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention set for Tuesday.
“So tomorrow is our convention, right?” he asked.
“Insha Allah (God willing),” an associate replied.
The former governor is being prosecuted alongside Amadu Sule on multiple counts, including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and granting undue advantage.
In a separate case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, also filed by the ICPC, El-Rufai is facing a 10-count charge involving alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud totaling ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.
He has consistently denied all allegations.
Since his return from Cairo on February 12, 2026, El-Rufai has remained entangled in a series of legal proceedings.
He was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before being transferred to the ICPC.
He was later granted temporary release on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial but subsequently returned to custody.
The Federal High Court had earlier scheduled his bail hearing for April 14 — the same day as the ADC convention.
While the ADC has described the prosecution as politically motivated, the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has dismissed the claim.
