Enzo Fernandez’s first-half header secured Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, sending the Blues into the FA Cup final just days after the sacking of manager Liam Rosenior.

The Argentine midfielder’s 23rd-minute goal proved decisive in a tense semi-final, booking Chelsea a showdown with Manchester City on May 16.

Fernandez’s heroics came against the backdrop of recent turmoil, having been dropped by Rosenior after suggesting he could leave the club at the end of the season — a situation that further strained dressing-room relations during a disastrous run of form.

Rosenior was dismissed on Wednesday following five consecutive defeats without scoring, Chelsea’s worst streak since 1912, capped by a 3-0 loss to Brighton. His tenure lasted just 106 days.

Now under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea showed signs of improvement as they look to salvage a disappointing campaign that has left them 10 points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.

“But, now led by interim manager Calum McFarlane, the Blues can partially salvage a miserable campaign by winning the FA Cup for the first time since 2018.”

Leeds had the first major chance when Brenden Aaronson raced through on goal but failed to beat goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Chelsea responded with Joao Pedro striking the post before taking the lead through Fernandez.

Pascal Struijk’s misplaced pass allowed Pedro Neto to deliver a pinpoint cross, which Fernandez headed into the far corner to end Chelsea’s nearly 300-minute scoring drought.

Leeds improved after the break, with Anton Stach forcing a fine save from Sanchez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing a clear opportunity to equalise.

Tensions rose late in the match when Sanchez went down for treatment, prompting accusations from Leeds players of time-wasting and sparking a heated touchline exchange.

Despite the pressure, Chelsea held firm to secure their place in the final — their 17th appearance — as they aim to lift the FA Cup for the eighth time and restore pride after a difficult season.
