Gala Shooting Reinforces Need for White House Ballroom, Says Trump

Following a shooting at a Washington gala, Donald Trump renewed calls for a $400m White House ballroom, saying it would improve security.

Donald Trump has argued that the shooting at a Washington gala underscores the need for his proposed $400 million White House ballroom, a project currently mired in legal disputes.

The president made the remarks after gunfire broke out Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, where a suspect was subdued by Secret Service agents after attempting to storm the venue.

The dinner, attended by Trump, top officials, and journalists, is a long-standing private event held near the White House.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump said the incident highlighted longstanding concerns over security at external venues.

“What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and… every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE,” he wrote.

He further claimed that the proposed ballroom—described as a “Militarily Top Secret” facility—would have prevented the incident.

“This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House,” Trump said. “It cannot be built fast enough! While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is.”

Trump has repeatedly promoted the ballroom project during his second term, despite criticism over its size and the decision to demolish the historic East Wing as part of the plan.

The proposal remains the subject of ongoing court battles, leaving its future uncertain.

The Washington Hilton, where the shooting occurred, is also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former president Ronald Reagan, adding to concerns over the security of high-profile events held there.
