ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has launched a new digital platform for reporting suspected financial fraud alongside an internal communication network, with Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu warning that technological advancement must not compromise citizens’ rights.

Disu spoke in Abuja during the launch of the NPF Vigilant App and the NPF–MTN Closed User Group (CUG) Network at the Force’s Conference Centre in Jabi.

The IGP directed police personnel to ensure that all technology deployed for policing purposes is used lawfully, ethically and responsibly, with safeguards in place to protect privacy, personal data and other citizens’ rights.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, Disu described the two initiatives as practical components of the Nigeria Police Force’s digital transformation programme.

According to him, the Vigilant App is aimed at improving engagement between the police and the public, while the CUG Network is expected to strengthen communication and coordination among personnel across the Force.

Developed by the Force ICT Department in partnership with stakeholders in the financial services ecosystem, the Vigilant App allows members of the public to report suspected financial fraud and provide supporting evidence.

Users can upload relevant documents or evidence, track the progress of their reports and receive feedback through the platform.

The application also provides a mechanism for coordinating with relevant institutions in accordance with existing laws and procedures.

The police said the digital initiatives would also enhance communication, emergency coordination and operational response across its various commands and units.

While highlighting the benefits of technology, Disu cautioned that its use in policing must remain firmly grounded in the protection of citizens’ rights.

He said technology was an important enabler of professional policing but insisted that its application must be backed by appropriate safeguards, privacy protections, data security and accountability.

The IGP said the Force would continue to pursue technology-driven solutions and strategic partnerships in its efforts to provide more accessible, responsive, people-centred and effective policing services.

He further pledged continued cooperation with relevant government institutions and private-sector partners to enhance public safety and national security.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of ICT, Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha, said the initiatives reflected the Force’s determination to deploy practical technology-based solutions to improve police service delivery and public engagement.

DIG Fayoade urged Nigerians to download the NPF Vigilant App through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, while calling on users to make responsible use of the platform when reporting suspected financial fraud.
