Uganda’s Aziz Abdul

Aziz Abdul’s quest for Commonwealth boxing glory ended in disappointment on Wednesday after the Ugandan heavyweight was disqualified for a headbutt during his quarter-final clash with England’s Damar Thomas in Glasgow.

The disqualification came after a tense super-heavyweight contest in which Abdul accumulated multiple warnings before being removed from the bout.

Ahead of the competition, Abdul had declared his ambition to become “the new king of Scotland,” referencing his grandfather, former Ugandan president Idi Amin, who famously proclaimed himself the “King of Scotland” in 1976. The eccentric claim later inspired the Oscar-winning film The Last King of Scotland.

Abdul started strongly by connecting with three sweeping left hooks in the opening round. However, Thomas responded with a sharp left hand that forced the Ugandan into a standing count.

The bout became increasingly physical in the second round, with Abdul penalised after repeatedly striking Thomas while the two fighters were breaking from a clinch.

His hopes of staging a comeback ended midway through the final round when he appeared to thrust his head into Thomas’s chin. The referee issued a third warning and immediately disqualified Abdul, drawing boos from the crowd.

Speaking after the fight, Abdul expressed his frustration with the outcome.

“This referee’s decision is not right and I am not happy,” he told reporters.

Questioning the officiating, he added:

“Of course it’s unfair. When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers create a lot of fouls.”
