Bayern Captain Manuel Neuer Hints Upcoming Season Could Be His Last

Manuel Neuer has hinted the 2026–27 campaign could be his last as the Bayern Munich goalkeeper prepares for a possible retirement.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has indicated that the 2026-27 season is expected to be the final chapter of his illustrious playing career.

Speaking during Bayern’s training camp in southern Bavaria on Tuesday, the 40-year-old admitted retirement is now the most likely outcome at the end of the campaign.

“It certainly looks very likely I’m going to retire,” Neuer told reporters.

The veteran goalkeeper recently signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern, saying the strength of the current squad convinced him to postpone retirement.

“In 85 percent of cases, I probably would have retired, but being part of this squad — along with the staff and the coaching team — is just fun.”

Neuer played a key role as Bayern completed a domestic double by winning both the Bundesliga and the German Cup in 2025-26, although the club’s Champions League campaign ended in the semi-finals against eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite struggling with recurring muscle injuries, Neuer remained an important figure for the Bavarian club.

He was unavailable for Bayern’s 3-0 German Cup final victory over Stuttgart in May and missed several other matches, allowing backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to step into the starting role.

While Bayern are once again among the favourites for Bundesliga and Champions League success, Neuer stressed he is focused on competing rather than marking the end of his career.

“I’m not playing these matches just to say, ‘This is my last game.’ It doesn’t matter if I might have visited a particular stadium for the last time.”

Neuer stepped away from international football after Euro 2024 but later returned for the most recent FIFA World Cup, where Germany suffered a surprise last-32 exit to Paraguay.

The former Schalke goalkeeper has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in modern football since joining Bayern in 2011, collecting 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups and two Champions League trophies.
