Havertz Equals Balogun’s Goal Tally as Golden Boot Race Begins to Take Shape
Kai Havertz scored a brace in Germany’s 7-1 win over Curaçao to join Folarin Balogun at the top of the World Cup 2026 scoring charts.
The battle for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot has tightened after Germany striker Kai Havertz joined USA forward Folarin Balogun at the top of the scoring chart with two goals each.
Balogun had set the benchmark earlier in the tournament when he scored twice during the United States’ convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles.
His brace not only helped the Americans secure an opening win but also made him the first USA player in nearly a century to score multiple goals in a World Cup match.
Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao on Sunday, however, saw Havertz draw level with the Monaco striker.
The German forward converted a penalty in stoppage time of the first half before completing his brace in the closing stages of the match.
Their performances leave both players tied at the summit of the adidas Golden Boot rankings after the opening round of fixtures.
