‘That’s a Lie’ — Peter Obi Rejects Claims of Anti-North Comments
NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi rejects claims of anti-North comments, citing his visits to conflict-hit states, support for IDP camps, Hajj sponsorships and education initiatives.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has denied claims that he made divisive remarks targeting northern Nigerians, insisting the allegation is unfounded and inconsistent with his record of supporting communities across the region.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former Anambra State governor maintained that he has consistently promoted national unity through humanitarian interventions and inclusive leadership.
Addressing the allegation directly, Obi said: “That’s a lie. It never happened.”
He recalled visiting Borno State at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency to sympathise with former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff after the death of his brother.
“At the onset of this Boko Haram issue… his own brother was killed. I travelled to Borno State to console him. When people didn’t want to go there, I went to Borno State,” he said.
Obi said he later returned to the state after severe flooding, where he donated ₦50 million, met with the governor and the Shehu of Borno, and visited displaced persons in IDP camps.
The NDC presidential candidate noted that his humanitarian work has extended to several northern states, including Katsina, Kebbi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Sokoto.
“I’ve been to the most troubled parts of the North… I’ve been to Benue up to four times, visiting the various affected communities… I’ve spent Christmas and New Year in IDP camps,” he said.
Obi also pointed to his personal and official relationships as evidence of his commitment to inclusiveness.
“My ADC was from Kano, and he’s a Muslim,” he said.
He added that all his cooks during his eight years as governor of Anambra State were northerners, while his administration sponsored Muslims in the state to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
“As governor, I was paying for Muslims living in Anambra to go to Hajj,” he said.
Obi further disclosed that he currently supports Almajiri schools in Kano and Bauchi, alongside a School of Nursing in Bauchi, saying the projects reflect his continued investment in education and humanitarian development across the country.
