At least 16 people lost their lives on Saturday as Russia and Ukraine launched fresh attacks against each other, underscoring the escalating intensity of a conflict that has stretched into its fifth summer with peace negotiations at an impasse.

The casualties were recorded across Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, north-eastern Ukraine and Russian border settlements, as the United Nations continues to warn of rising civilian deaths.

Russian occupation officials said eight people, including two children, were killed after what they described as a Ukrainian strike on the Azov Sea village of Kyrylivka.

Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian-appointed leader of occupied Zaporizhzhia, claimed Kyiv had targeted “tourist camps” in the village, leaving 14 others injured. Ukrainian authorities had not responded to the allegation.

In Ukraine, officials said a Russian drone attack struck a Nova Poshta courier depot in Sumy, killing three drivers. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault, calling it a “double-tap” drone strike.

Elsewhere, two civilians were reported killed in southern Ukraine, while Russian officials said two villagers died in border regions and another person was killed in occupied Kherson.

Ukraine also carried out drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, hitting an oil refinery in the Tyumen region of Siberia and targeting the city of Yekaterinburg, extending its campaign against infrastructure linked to Russia’s military operations.

Tyumen Governor Alexander Moor said a Ukrainian drone landed “on the territory” of the refinery, causing a fire.

Russian authorities reported intercepting more than 300 Ukrainian drones launched across multiple regions.

President Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had struck a factory in Kirov for the second straight day.

“Once again, a plant in Kirov was struck – the one supplying components for the weapons Russia uses to attack our people,” Zelensky said.

Following Friday’s attack, Kirov Governor Alexander Sokolov declared three days of mourning, confirming that five people had died after one individual previously listed as dead was found alive.

“The strike would only unite us against the enemy,” Sokolov said, adding that Russia was fighting “the collective West.”

In Yekaterinburg, Russian e-commerce company Wildberries evacuated employees and suspended operations at one of its logistics centres after drone attacks. Regional officials said no casualties were reported, although a fire broke out in a car park.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made no public statement on the latest wave of attacks.

Ukraine says its strikes on Russian territory are retaliation for Moscow’s sustained bombardment of Ukrainian cities throughout the war.
