The African Democratic Congress has called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing him as a “prisoner of conscience” following deliberations at its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

The declaration formed part of a broader set of resolutions adopted by the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

A communiqué issued after the meeting and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated: “The NEC recognises Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai as prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate release.”

Beyond the issue of El-Rufai, the party used the meeting to formalise several organisational and electoral decisions.

The NEC endorsed the outcome of the ADC’s primaries for state assembly, National Assembly, governorship and presidential positions across the country. However, the approval excluded elections that are still under appeal or have not yet been completed.

“NEC approved the results of all recently conducted primaries for State Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly, State Governors, and the Presidential elections; except those with pending appeals as at May 29, 2026, and those yet to be concluded,” the communiqué noted.

The party also approved an extension of the tenure of its National Working Committee for another year.

“NEC approved the extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) for a period of 12 months from the expiry of their current tenure,” the statement said.

To strengthen party administration nationwide, the NEC further authorised the creation of caretaker committees at the zonal, state, local government and ward levels, with the structures expected to operate for a one-year period.

The resolutions signal the ADC’s efforts to consolidate its internal structures and electoral preparations ahead of the next general election cycle.
