Former President Goodluck Jonathan has met behind closed doors with the Kabiru Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja amid the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

Although no official details of the meeting were released, sources within the party said the discussions centred on the recent Federal High Court judgment involving the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) and the implications for the party’s leadership.

The delegation, headed by Interim NWC Chairman Kabiru Turaki (SAN), visited Jonathan at his Abuja residence. The PDP neither disclosed the identities of other members present nor issued a statement after the meeting.

The consultation came shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit filed by the PDP BoT seeking an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Turaki-led interim NWC and reflect it in the commission’s official records.

In his ruling, Justice Salim Ibrahim upheld objections raised by INEC and other defendants, holding that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to institute the suit and that the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

“The court does not decide hypothetical or academic questions,” Justice Ibrahim ruled.

The judge further noted that evidence before the court indicated that INEC had monitored the PDP convention that produced the rival leadership currently recognised by the electoral body.

He also ruled that the suit attempted to revisit issues that had already been settled in previous legal proceedings.

According to a source familiar with the meeting:

“The discussion was essentially on the implications of the judgment. The delegation briefed the former president on the outcome of the case and sought his views on the way forward for the party.”

The meeting underscores the PDP’s continuing efforts to navigate its leadership challenges and chart a path forward following the court’s decision.
