US Blockade Illegal and Ineffective, Iran’s Pezeshkian Says Amid Escalating Threats

Tehran warns of possible retaliation as it rejects the US blockade, calling it a violation of international law.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has criticised the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, calling it unlawful and warning it will fail to achieve its intended goals.

“Any attempt to impose a maritime blockade or restrictions is contrary to international law… and is doomed to fail,” he said on Thursday.

According to Pezeshkian, the blockade risks worsening instability in the Persian Gulf, adding it would “not only fail to enhance regional security” but also create further tension.

The United States imposed the blockade on April 13, days after a ceasefire halted fighting between both sides. Iran, however, has maintained its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for international energy supplies.

Tehran has repeatedly warned of retaliation. Mohsen Rezaei, a top adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said Iran would not accept the blockade.

“We will not tolerate the naval blockade. If it continues, Iran will respond,” he said, warning that further confrontation could result in US losses and captured personnel.

Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad also downplayed the impact on the country’s energy sector.

“The US will not gain any results,” he said, adding that oil workers were ensuring uninterrupted supply.

In a further show of readiness, navy chief Shahram Irani revealed that Iran plans to deploy newly developed naval systems “in the very near future,” underscoring rising tensions between both countries.
