FIFA Congress Opens Amid Iran Dispute, World Cup Tensions and Russia Ban Debate

Iran’s absence, ticket price backlash and Russia’s ban dominate discussions at FIFA’s 76th Congress ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The 76th Congress of FIFA begins in Vancouver on Thursday, with geopolitical tensions and World Cup concerns set to take centre stage.

Delegates from more than 200 member associations are expected to deliberate on key issues, including the Iran crisis, preparations for the upcoming World Cup, and the ongoing exclusion of Russia from international football.

Iran’s delegation has already withdrawn from the meeting after arriving in Canada. Federation president Mehdi Taj and his colleagues reportedly left following what they described as disrespectful treatment by immigration authorities.

Canada maintains that individuals connected to the IRGC are barred from entry, a stance that has intensified uncertainty around Iran’s role in the World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Despite Iran’s proposal to shift its matches away from the US, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the fixtures would proceed as originally scheduled.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iranian players would be permitted to participate, though restrictions may apply to certain officials.

Infantino himself is under pressure over escalating ticket prices and his ties to Donald Trump. FIFA recently raised prize distributions to nearly $900 million in response to concerns from participating teams about financial strain.

Advocacy groups have also called on FIFA to guarantee safety and rights for fans and journalists, particularly in light of US immigration policies.

In addition, the Congress could revisit Russia’s ban from global football competitions. Infantino has indicated support for reviewing the suspension, arguing it has only increased “frustration and hatred.”
