Alcaraz Pulls Out of French Open and Rome as Wrist Injury Forces Layoff

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from the French Open and Rome Masters due to a wrist injury, saying he will focus on recovery before returning to competition.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from this year’s French Open, confirming on Friday that a wrist injury will also keep him out of the Rome event.

“We have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros,” Alcaraz said on social media.

“It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from this,” he added, saying his recovery will be closely monitored before any decision on his return is made.

The injury occurred during the opening round of the Barcelona Open last week, where he defeated Otto Virtanen before withdrawing from the tournament.

He had already missed the Madrid Open after pulling out on April 17, sparking doubts over his French Open defence.

Alcaraz, 22, enjoyed a strong start to the year, winning the Australian Open in January to become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam. He also holds a 22-3 record this season, including a title in Doha.

Currently ranked world No. 2, he lost the top ranking after falling to Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final on April 12.

A dominant force on clay, Alcaraz has won the French Open in both 2024 and 2025, including a dramatic final last year where he saved three championship points against Sinner.
