US Court Jails Father of Teen School Gunman for 15 Years Over Fatal Georgia Attack

A Georgia court has sentenced Colin Gray, the father of teenage school shooter Colt Gray, to 15 years in prison after finding him criminally responsible for enabling the deadly 2024 attack at Apalachee High School.

The 55-year-old was convicted in March on charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors argued he ignored repeated warning signs about his son’s violent behavior and still gave him the AR-15-style rifle used in the attack as a Christmas present in 2023.

Colt Gray, now 16, admitted carrying out the September 2024 shooting at the high school in Winder, Georgia. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Tuesday to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The attack left four people dead—two 14-year-old students and two teachers—and injured nine others.

At sentencing, Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm said Colin Gray had repeatedly failed to act despite clear indications that his son needed intervention.

“It is clear you failed as a parent,” the judge said. “You did not provide a stable household. You didn’t have him in school.”

Primm stressed that Gray’s conviction was not based solely on poor parenting but on his failure to prevent access to firearms despite obvious warning signs.

“None of those failures helped your case. But those aren’t why you were convicted. You were convicted because the warning lights were flashing brighter and brighter and you didn’t get him help and you didn’t remove his access to the guns.”

Legal experts have described the case as historic. Colin Gray is believed to be the first parent in the United States to be convicted of murder over a school shooting committed by their child.

The sentence follows another landmark case involving the parents of the Michigan high school shooter, Jennifer and James Crumbley, who were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2024 and sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison after their son’s 2021 attack killed four people.

The prosecutions reflect an increasing willingness by US authorities to pursue criminal charges against parents whose actions or negligence contribute to deadly school shootings.
