Arsenal Maintain Six-Point Premier League Advantage After Narrow Hull Win, Spurs Stumble at Leeds
Arsenal secured a narrow victory over Hull City to strengthen their Premier League title hopes, while Leeds ended Tottenham’s three-game winning streak with a 1-0 win.
Arsenal strengthened their position at the summit of the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Hull City on Saturday, while Tottenham Hotspur suffered a disappointing defeat against Leeds United.
The Gunners were expected to enjoy a comfortable afternoon against Hull, who had gone without a league win since August. However, the visitors proved difficult to break down, forcing Mikel Arteta’s men to work hard for all three points.
Despite controlling much of the possession at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal struggled to find the breakthrough until captain Martin Odegaard struck in the 72nd minute.
The goal secured Arsenal’s ninth victory in 10 matches and extended their advantage at the top of the table to six points.
Manchester City, however, have the opportunity to cut the gap to three points when they face Nottingham Forest later in the day. City will also be eager to avoid a third consecutive defeat.
Arsenal had appealed for a penalty towards the end of the first half after Hull defender Nobel Mendy appeared to pull Kai Havertz’s shirt inside the penalty area.
However, the intervention of VAR went against the home side, with the review establishing that Havertz was offside during the build-up to the incident.
The hosts continued searching for a goal after the restart, with their frustration growing as Hull maintained their defensive resistance.
Their breakthrough finally arrived through Odegaard, who reacted quickest after goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis failed to hold Noni Madueke’s left-footed effort.
Madueke had cut inside from the right before shooting, leaving the rebound for Odegaard to convert from close range. It was the Arsenal captain’s first goal since early September.
Leeds end Tottenham’s three-game winning streak
Tottenham’s improving form suffered a setback as Leeds United claimed a 1-0 home victory, courtesy of a late goal from substitute Noah Okafor.
The decisive moment came in the 79th minute, ending Spurs’ three-match winning run and handing Leeds a valuable result after five consecutive league games without a victory.
However, the match was also overshadowed by controversy surrounding a first-half challenge by Leeds defender Jayden Bogle on Tottenham winger Mathys Tel.
The incident was examined by VAR officials over the possibility of a red card, but no dismissal was recommended. Tel subsequently left the pitch shortly before half-time.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi refused to make a definitive judgement on the challenge, although he maintained his confidence in the match officials.
“In the first situation of Mathys Tel I didn’t see, I can’t say nothing,” he told TNT Sports.
The Italian added: “I have big confidence in the referee. Nothing changes if he goes to watch the clip or not. I think there was the VAR and if they didn’t take the right decision, I don’t know, but we have confidence.”
The result was particularly disappointing for Tottenham, who had arrived at Elland Road encouraged by their recent recovery following a difficult opening to the season.
On his part, Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his players for their collective effort, saying they had displayed “great spirit, great commitment, great unity”.
Fulham deny Newcastle victory
Elsewhere, Newcastle United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Fulham despite taking a late lead at Craven Cottage.
Jacob Murphy looked to have secured victory for Newcastle when he produced a spectacular finish in the 80th minute.
But Fulham refused to give up, with substitute Rodrigo Muniz restoring parity just three minutes later to rescue a point for the hosts.
