Osimhen vs Lookman

Victor Osimhen has broken his silence on Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting the disappointment remains painful for the Super Eagles squad.

Nigeria will not participate in the expanded 48-team tournament despite Africa receiving nine automatic qualification places and an extra playoff slot.

The Super Eagles’ campaign ended after they finished second in their qualifying group and later lost to DR Congo in the continental playoffs.

The result confirmed Nigeria’s second straight absence from the World Cup, a major setback for one of Africa’s traditional football giants.

Speaking during a recent livestream on social media, Osimhen said the failure to reach the tournament has been difficult for the players to accept.

“It’s bad, not just for me but for the rest of the guys,” the striker said.

“We’ve missed out twice in a row. Sometimes life happens, so we just have to keep moving.”

Nigeria last played at the FIFA World Cup in 2018, meaning Osimhen and several younger members of the current squad are still waiting for their first appearance at football’s biggest event.
