The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has thrown its support behind UEFA and CONCACAF in rejecting FIFA’s proposal to allow private investment in the commercial operations of the FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Friday, the AFC said it shares the concerns raised by the two confederations over the potential impact of the proposal on the future of football.

“The AFC stands in solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF in expressing serious concerns over FIFA’s proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA’s flagship competitions,” the confederation said.

The Asian football governing body also expressed concern that the controversy surrounding the proposal has escalated to the point where a boycott of the FIFA World Cup is now being openly discussed.

“The fact that the situation has reached the point where the real possibility of a FIFA World Cup boycott has entered public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game.”

Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, the AFC is the governing body for football in Asia and represents 47 member nations, including Australia, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia.
