Breaking: Bala Mohammed Defects to Allied Peoples Movement in Major Blow to Peoples Democratic Party
Bala Mohammed has left the PDP for APM in a major political shift that could impact Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defection, announced on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, was attended by senior officials, party leaders, and APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle. Several loyalists, including members linked to the Tanimu Turaki faction, also joined him.
Mohammed described the move as both calculated and necessary, stating:
“After extensive consultation, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement.”
Political Repositioning
The governor said the decision was aimed at strengthening his political base and ensuring a viable platform for his supporters ahead of 2027.
“This is guided by one overriding objective: to secure victory in both states and continue to serve our people with utmost integrity, effectively mobilise our supporters and present a coherent and credible alternative to the people,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of leadership direction, adding:
“We cannot allow our people to run out without a credible and effective political platform.”
Setback for PDP
Mohammed’s departure represents a significant loss for the PDP, particularly given his previous role as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged the party’s role in his political career, saying:
“It has been a platform through which we have found and contributed to the development of our state and our peer nation. We remain grateful for this history and the opportunities provided.”
Induction Ceremony
During the event, Yusuf Dantalle formally received the governor into the APM, presenting him with the party’s membership card and symbolic materials, including its flag.
“I welcome you into the party, and I will start by giving you what qualifies you to be a member of the party: your membership card,” he said.
The move follows a closed-door meeting of stakeholders where the defection decision was reportedly sealed, marking a new phase in Bauchi’s political direction ahead of the next general elections.
