“INEC Youth Ambassador Offer: Why Governor Amuneke Said No to the Appointment”
Nigerian comedian Governor Amuneke says he rejected INEC youth ambassador appointment over limitations on speaking freely about the electoral body.
Skit maker Kevin Chinedu, known as Governor Amuneke, has explained his decision to reject an appointment as youth ambassador of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying it would have restricted his freedom to speak freely.
In a video shared on X on Monday, Amuneke said the offer was initially emotional and encouraging, but he ultimately turned it down due to conditions tied to the role.
“Reports came to me that I was going to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador… it brought me tears of joy when I thought about how far I have come,” he said.
However, he said he asked whether he would still be allowed to criticise INEC and was told he could not do so directly.
“They told me… I can preach about getting PVCs… however, I cannot criticise INEC directly,” he explained.
According to him, the condition made him reconsider the offer.
“The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared… I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice,” he said.
Amuneke said his focus remains on using his platform to speak for ordinary Nigerians and hold institutions accountable.
“If you have a platform today and you do not compromise… there are millions of people whose hope is on that voice,” he said.
He expressed appreciation for the nomination but said he is only open to partnerships that do not limit his creative independence.
“I am open to working with brands and institutions, but not under conditions that restrict my content,” he added.
