The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha has announced that the 2026 edition of the renowned Ofala Onitsha Festival will be held on Friday, October 16, with the theme, “From Resilience to Progress.”

Speaking on the theme, Chairman of the Ofala Steering Committee, Okechukwu Mike Areh, said it reflects the shared spirit, perseverance and hopes of the Onitsha people.

He said the theme underscores the determination of Ndi Onicha to preserve their traditions while pursuing growth and development.

“This theme, ‘From Resilience to Progress,’ calls on every Onye Onicha to move forward and advance our heritage and future together,” Areh said.

Areh explained that the Ofala festival, which is rooted in spirituality and tradition, remains the most important event in the Onitsha ceremonial calendar.

“Ofala is primarily a celebration by the monarch and his subjects of the Obi’s annual emergence from seclusion, during which the monarch is believed to have successfully negotiated the fortunes of the kingdom,” he stated.

He added that the festival also celebrates the historic discovery that yam is a safe and valuable source of food, representing thanksgiving, renewal and joy among the people.

According to him, the ceremony serves as a renewal rite for the Obi and helps strengthen the connection between the throne and the people.

Although it remains a significant annual traditional and ritual obligation, Areh said the festival has expanded into a major cultural event with activities including an international art exhibition, the Ofala Youth Carnival, and community medical, health and wellbeing outreach programmes.

The festival is expected to attract dignitaries, traditional rulers, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from within and outside Nigeria, further boosting Onitsha’s reputation as a centre of rich culture and tradition.
