Real Madrid to discipline Valverde and Tchouaméni over training-ground altercation
Federico Valverde reportedly required hospital treatment after a clash with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni during Real Madrid training.
Real Madrid have announced plans to punish midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni after a training-ground clash reportedly resulted in Valverde receiving hospital treatment.
The club confirmed the move in an official statement, saying: “Following the incidents that occurred this morning during the first team’s training session, (the club) has decided to open disciplinary proceedings against our players Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.”
Spanish reports said Valverde was taken to a hospital close to Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training centre alongside coach Alvaro Arbeloa, where he reportedly received stitches for a facial wound.
The club later disclosed that Valverde had sustained a head injury but remained in “good condition,” adding that he would likely be sidelined for up to a fortnight.
As a result, the midfielder is expected to miss Sunday’s El Clasico clash against FC Barcelona in La Liga.
Reports indicated that the disagreement between the two players first broke out during Wednesday’s training before tensions resurfaced during and after Thursday’s session.
Marca reported that the cut suffered by Valverde was accidental and not directly caused by a punch from Tchouaméni.
AFP said neither the club nor the players’ representatives provided additional comments regarding the altercation.
Spanish media reports further claimed Valverde declined to shake Tchouaméni’s hand and later fouled him during training, with the confrontation allegedly continuing inside the dressing room where the injury occurred.
Tensions are said to be rising within the Real Madrid squad amid another disappointing campaign that could see the club finish a second consecutive season without a major title.
Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, currently hold an 11-point lead over Real Madrid and could secure back-to-back La Liga crowns this weekend if they avoid defeat.
