A few days ago, sons and daughters of Edo State in the diaspora converged at the Oasis Banqueting Hall in East London, United Kingdom, for Edo Shine 2026 with the theme, Shining Beyond Borders. There was a sense of anticipation as we awaited the arrival of the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, aka Akpakomiza.

As the Governor walked into the hall to a rapturous welcome, he was accompanied by a high-powered retinue of some appointees in his administration as well as political leaders. A former Governor and serving Senator, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was also in attendance. The electric atmosphere in the hall, which was filled to capacity, was a spectacle to behold. There was positivity all around, and for many of us present, the feeling was one of inspiration, belief, and ‘edolitic’ energy.

In his address, Governor Okpebholo touched the Solar Plexus of our Edoness. In his words, “the strongest bond that is between us is Edo. Oba gha tor Okpere!”, he echoed. The applause was thunderous as a chorus of “Iseeee!!!, Oba Ne Edo, Oba Ne Edo” filled the air heart-warmingly. The Governor went on, “In Edo State we don’t have two Obas. We have just one”.  What a galvanising moment that was!

It is instructive to point out that a people without a sense of history and belonging are a disaster waiting to happen. As Edo State people, we know our history, and we value our heritage. Edo State sons and daughters are articulate and passionate. We are a special people and have a rich culture in the South-South region of Nigeria. Across the world, we are renowned for our drive, tenacity, and panache. Our glorious mantra sits on a tripod of quintessential arts, craftsmanship and traditions for centuries, which resonates far beyond our shores.

Edo State is a land of culture and royalty. We are a people of poise, pride, charm, flair and mercurial wisdom. Our heritage is embedded in a divinity which is steeped in savvy enlightenment, endowed skill, and know-how. The average Edolite is industrious and conventionally wise. We are known to be systematically thoughtful and inquisitive. These attributes are underpinned by a rich cultural heritage. We are `exquisitely arrogant` in the real sense of it. ‘Edo nor dey carry last ’, and we are not one to be easily shoved aside.

We revere our King, His Royal Majesty, Omo N`Oba Ne Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare ll. There are Enigies, Onojies, titled Chiefs, Odionweres and Youth leaders who superintend over various domains in our stratosphere. These age-long hierarchical structures help promote communal peace and social cohesion in various towns and villages.

As a people, we recognise and understand leadership and the responsibility that goes with it. A Benin proverb, unapologetically, says, `Odionwere gha se omwan egbe aire bor yor`. (The oracle is not consulted when it’s your turn to become the community head by seniority).

At its height, the Great Benin Kingdom stretched as far as the Bight of Benin, Togo, the Niger Delta area, and to Lagos (Eko).  The current delineation was a result of colonial imperialism and republicanism. Since its creation as the Midwestern region in 1963, to Bendel State (1976) and now Edo State (1991), the State has been making steady progress.

Like any other ethnic group, a few of our people have veered off the lane, accentuated by trend-seeking social media content creators. These folks can sell their kit and kin for a morsel of bread and do anything for online views to earn dollars from YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other social media handles. The character of these few does not and should not define us. Some mothers and fathers do have them.

Their uncouth behaviour on social media does not define our Edoness. We are a people who thrive on respect for self and others. Our diversity and inclusivity is exemplified by our warmth and reception of other ethnic groups in Nigeria. Non-indigenes living in Edo State can attest to this. They buy and own land and properties without discrimination.

We have been blessed with unique transformational leaders. God bless the memory of Dr Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia and Prof. Ambrose Alli, who left indelible footprints in the sands of time. Their vision, mission and accomplishments remain a gold standard in our state and national history.

The incumbent Governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo aka Akpakomiza, is standing on the shoulders of those giants. He is quietly (without noise) creating his own legacy. His mantra of practical governance is laden with calmness. His ‘workative’, humble, humane and non-talkative style has won him many a disciple.

The Governor’s demeanour of less talk, but more work done is impacting and touching the lives of Edo State people at the grassroots. A man of few words, his disposition of ‘getting it done’ is a clear departure from the era of our ‘once-upon-a-time’ so-called smooth-talking PowerPoint and seminar technocrat of a previous era.

Under the leadership of Akpakomiza, Edo State is on a generic re-oxygenation.  The vital organs of development – security, healthcare, infrastructure, natural resources and education are being revamped.  This is in addition to his recognition and harnessing of the enormous power of the Edo State diaspora.  In setting up the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Governor Monday Okpebholo scored a first. Akpakomiza’s engagement with Edo State diaspora is trailblazing and a turning of the page. In his words, “Beyond the remittances, the Edo State diaspora are major stakeholders in the overall development of the state.

To the naysayers, the time has come for you all to sheath your swords. Edo State belong to us all. We have no other state to call our own. The `pull-it-down` and `if I am not there, it will not work` attitude has got to stop. Constructive (and not destructive) criticism is a prerequisite for societal advancement.  Similarly, it is also necessary to give commendation if and when due. Enough of all this pouring of expletives on one another on social media.

As a people, let us learn the hard truth. Only one person can be Governor at a time. No doubt there are challenges, but they are not insurmountable. A Benin Proverb says, ‘Akugbe ore etin, iwanegbe ere ore udevben’ (Unity is strength, division brings a fall). The shining glory of Edo State is a catalyst to inspire a new generation. As we mark 35 years of the creation of our dear state on 27th August 2026, let us roll out the drums to celebrate our Edoness. Yes, we can! May Edo State Succeed. God Bless Edo State, Amen.
